For Igede Icon Magazine
A Production Of IGEDE Carnival
Societal life is most attractive when it creates a positive impact on humanity. The Igede people, spread across Nigeria and the globe, are an exceptional ethnic group whose resilience, culture, and contributions make them worthy of appreciation.
HISTORICAL ROOTS AND MIGRATION
The Igede are primarily found in Benue State, Nigeria, with communities in Cross River, Osun, Ogun, Lagos, Kaduna, Jos, Abuja, Nasarawa, and beyond. Historically, they are believed to have originated either from Sabon Gida, Ora in Edo State or from the Ogoja province in Cross River State. The story of their Ora migration to Benue was reportedly triggered by a skirmish with the native Ora people, leading them to settle in their current locations.
CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE
Family and Lineage: Igede culture places high value on male children, seen as custodians of tradition and family heritage.
Food and Agriculture: Yam is their staple crop, alongside cassava, cocoyam, and palm trees for red oil and palm wine.
Attire and Social Life: Their unique cultural attire distinguishes them at social gatherings, while their warm greetings; similar to those of the Igbo are renowned for charm and friendliness.
Spirituality: They maintain a strong spiritual connection with nature, emphasizing the bond between the natural and spiritual worlds.
Agricultural Contribution: Within Benue State, they are recognized as second‑degree contributors to food production, reinforcing their importance in Nigeria’s food basket.
DIASPORA PRESENCE
Igede migration has extended far beyond Nigeria:
Within Nigeria: In Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Jos, Anambra, Delta, Rivers, and Oyo (Ogbomosho, Shaki, Ejigbo), Igede people thrive as entrepreneurs, artisans, and agro‑economy contributors. They dominate industries such as shoe production and fashion design, while also excelling in large‑scale farming of yam, maize, cassava, and groundnuts.
Across Africa: Significant Igede populations are found in other African countries, adding value to local economies and societies.
Globally: In Canada, the UK, US, Australia, Poland, and elsewhere, Igede people are recognized for their roles in education, cultural diversity, and professional excellence.
Community Building and Integration
The Igede Development Association (IDA) plays a central role in uniting the diaspora, fostering cooperation, and promoting development. Through such associations, Igede people maintain their cultural heritage while adapting to new environments. They actively engage in:
Community building and development projects.
Social integration through intermarriages and collaborations with other ethnic groups.
Cultural exchange, ensuring traditions remain vibrant while embracing modernity.
CONCLUSION
Whether at home or abroad, the Igede people embody resilience, adaptability, and resourcefulness. They contribute significantly to the economic, social, and cultural fabric of their communities, while preserving their heritage and fostering peaceful coexistence. Truly, they are a unique people whose impact resonates locally and globally; a community to be proud of.
